Business Details

  • Horizon Nuclear Power Limited is a UK-based nuclear project development company founded in 2009 as a joint venture between RWE and E.ON, later acquired by Hitachi Ltd. in 2012. Headquartered at Sunrise House, 1420 Charlton Court, Gloucester Business Park, Gloucester GL3 4AE, England, United Kingdom.
It planned to build two to three Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (UK-ABWR) at the Wylfa Newydd (Anglesey) and Oldbury (South Gloucestershire) sites. On 17 January 2019, Horizon announced the suspension of its UK nuclear development programme, citing economic non-viability despite extensive investment (£2 billion) and government offers. By September 2020, Hitachi withdrew fully, and Horizon wound down operations, retaining only minimal interaction with UK government and stakeholders. Ownership of the Wylfa and Oldbury sites transferred to Great British Nuclear in March 2024. Regulatory assessment by the UK Office for Nuclear Regulation remains suspended.
